This tutorial is for those users of locked iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, who updated to iOS 5.0.1 and realized that ultrasn0w unlock doesn’t work there.

Indeed DevTeam have not updated software unlock utility ultrasn0w to work with the latest iOS 5.0.1. There are two workarounds, that will make ultrasn0w work on 5.0.1.

DevTeam released much anticipated untethered jailbreak for the latest iOS 4.3.1 – RedSn0w 0.9.6 rc9 and PwngeTool 4.3.

The 4.3.1 untether works on all Apple devices that support 4.3.1 except for the iPad2:

• iPhone 3GS
• iPhone 4 (GSM)
• iPod Touch 3G
• iPod Touch 4G
• iPad 1
• AppleTV 2G (PwnageTool only for now)

Redsnow is easy to use, it is available for Windows and Mac OS. Pwnagetool can be used to create custom ipsw and preserve baseband, it supports Mac OS only.

You cannot use JailBreakMe method to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G using redsn0w. Here are the instructions:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.2). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.
• If you need a carrier unlock – install ultrasn0w in Cydia (add repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com). For T-Mobile in the USA remember to turn off 3G mode in Settings→General→Network.

There is no official jailbreak utility for iOS 4.0.1. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G. Just do the following:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.1). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.

Sherif Hashim has discovered an exploit which may allow unlock of the latest iPhone OS 3.1.3 baseband 05.12.01. Such unlock utilities for previous baseband versions were called blacksn0w, ultrasn0w и and yellowsn0w. MuscleNerd, the member of DevTeam, has already confirmed it is working. So the timing of the unlcok release is totally up to them right now.

Here is an official update from DevTeam:

“We’ve started to look at his crash but it’s a long road between any given crash and a fully working unlock, and we couldn’t put an ETA on it even if we wanted to. It’s not even guaranteed that an working unlock will come from this particular crash — it’s just too early to tell.”
