These are instructions on how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 3G on iOS 4.2.1 using PwnageTool 4.1.3 for Mac OS X. This tutorial will explain how to upgrade your baseband if needed for an unlock.

Step One
Make a folder called “Pwnage” on the desktop. Download a couple of things:

• PwnageTool 4.1.3 from here

You will also need the 4.2.1 iPhone firmware.

• iPhone 3G iOS 4.2.1: iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

If you are on the 05.14 or 05.15 baseband you will also need the iPad 3.2.2 firmware. You can find out your baseband version in Settings -> General -> About -> Modem Firmware.

• iPad iOS 3.2.2: iPad1,1_3.2.2_7B500_Restore.ipsw

When downloading the IPSW file, it is best to download it with Firefox since Safari often auto extracts it!

Step Two
Double click to mount PwnageTool then drag the PwnageTool icon into the Pwnage folder.

You cannot use JailBreakMe method to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G using redsn0w. Here are the instructions:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.2). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.
• If you need a carrier unlock – install ultrasn0w in Cydia (add repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com). For T-Mobile in the USA remember to turn off 3G mode in Settings→General→Network.

If you have iPhone 3G, just use redsn0w to jailbreak and hactivate. If you have iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 follow these instructions:

If you are already Jailbroken:

So you have an iPhone with iOS 4.0, but don’t have the original SIM and stuck on the Emergency Call Screen:

1. Download ifunbox software (download link)
2. Run ifunbox software and sync with phone
3. Go to /private/var/root/Library/, delete original lockdown folder and put this lockdown folder after you extract it from the zip file
4. Restart phone

There is no official jailbreak utility for iOS 4.0.1. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G. Just do the following:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.1). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.

Good news is that you can still use redsn0w 0.8 to jailbreak firmware 3.0.1. Here’s the step-by-step plan:

1. Download both firmware 3.0 and firmware 3.0.1 (link).
2. Download redsn0w 0.8 (link).
3. Update or restore to official 3.0.1 in iTunes.
4. Run redsn0w.
5. When redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one.
6. Follow the instructions.
7. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.
